Private Lessons
Why should you take lessons with me? (In person or virtual)
I have been a performing musician for 12+ years and have 6+ years of teaching experience working with students, teaching masterclasses, running sectionals, etc. Together I will work with you to figure out a plan that best fits your individual goals with the bassoon and how we can best reach them!
Our first lesson together will be considered a trial lesson and is completely free. For you, this is an opportunity to get an idea of my teaching style and decide if this is something you want to pursue before fully committing. For me this is a good chance to understand who you are and where you are at on the bassoon. Your lessons are customized to your needs and this gives a good jumping-off point to creating your individualized plan!
Virtual lessons
These will be no different from an in-person lesson (with the exception of my ability to work on your reeds). You will still receive a lesson plan customized specifically for you and my full attention. My ultimate goal is always for you to feel like you are getting something beneficial out of these lessons. You are responsible for having a working computer, speaker and microphone.
What would a first lesson look like?
Both online and in person the first lesson is a little bit like an interview for the both of us. Some of the things we will cover are:
What do you like about the bassoon and why do you want to take lessons?
What is your playing ability?
What bassoon do you use?
Are there any quick improvements we can make today?
Focusing on these areas is what helps for me to best determine a plan going forward. As a reminder this first lesson is completely risk-free and no commitment needs to be made until after this first lesson.
Possible Bassoon Skills we will cover:
Audition prep (All-state, Solo & Ensemble, Honor bands, College, etc)
Ensemble music
Fundamentals (Breathing, sound production, scales, etc)
Effective practice strategies
How to mark your music in a way that is easier to understand
